Dartitis Frequently Asked Questions

What is dartitis?

Dartitis is a term used by darts players to describe a problem with their throwing action, often involving hesitation, tension or difficulty releasing the dart.

How do you overcome dartitis?

There is no single solution that works for every player. Some players try changes to their technique or practice routine, while others seek professional help. My approach focuses on the mental response surrounding the throwing action, using BWRT® and, where appropriate, hypnotherapy.

Can BWRT® help with dartitis?

BWRT® is the approach I have found particularly effective in the dartitis cases I have treated. I’ve worked with around half a dozen players experiencing dartitis and have experienced a very high level of success. Individual results can vary and no treatment can guarantee a particular outcome.

Can hypnotherapy help with dartitis?

Hypnotherapy may be helpful for some players, particularly where anxiety, confidence or pressure are involved. In my own experience treating dartitis, however, I have found BWRT® more effective.

Why can’t I release my dart?

Difficulty releasing the dart is one of the most common experiences associated with dartitis. The throwing action can become something you consciously monitor and try to control, rather than an automatic movement.

Is dartitis caused by anxiety?

Anxiety and performance pressure can be associated with dartitis, but you don’t necessarily need to have a general anxiety problem. Dartitis can be very specific to the throwing action and the circumstances in which you play.

Is dartitis the same as the yips?

Dartitis is sometimes compared with the yips experienced in other sports because both can involve difficulty performing a previously automatic movement. However, individual experiences vary.

Will changing my darts cure dartitis?

Changing your darts, grip or throwing technique may help some players, but it isn’t necessarily the answer. If the problem is being maintained by the mental response surrounding the throw, equipment changes may not address the underlying issue.

Can professional darts players get dartitis?

Yes. Dartitis isn’t restricted to amateur players. Players at all levels can experience problems with their throwing action.

How long does dartitis last?

There is no fixed timeframe. Some players experience dartitis for a short period, while for others it can continue for months or years.

Do I need to stop playing darts?

Not necessarily. Whether taking a break is helpful depends on the individual. There is no universal requirement to stop playing darts.

Can I get dartitis treatment online?

Yes. I offer online sessions, so you don’t need to live in Bedfordshire to discuss your dartitis with me.

What if I’ve had dartitis for years?

A long history of dartitis doesn’t necessarily mean that you can’t overcome it. The first step is understanding what is happening during your throwing action and what has become associated with the problem.

How do I know if you can help me?

The easiest way is to arrange a free initial consultation.

You can explain what you’re experiencing, what you’ve tried and how dartitis is affecting your game. We can then discuss whether I believe my approach could be suitable for you.
